Thanks to Lawrence Hanney for news of the proposed reopening of the Bere Alston to Tavistock line...

The reopening is looking good, but there is a public consultation going on which closes soon. There is some concern locally about the proposal to build 700 houses, which come as part of the deal, but anyone in favour of the reopening is encouraged to comment. Details of how to do so are here:

The consultation on the Bere Alston to Tavistock rail line is being carried out by West Devon Borough Council, through local planning. Go to http://www.westdevon.gov.uk/consultation

Click on Regulation 27 Core Strategy DPD, then click on "Read and Comment on Document". Expand (+) chapter 8, and select Tavistock. You can then add comments selecting the tab at the top of the main body of text, though you might need to register. Otherwise, comments can be submitted by one of their forms.

For a limited period Panamint are offering a number of DVDs for only half price. Full details here (keep checking this page as further titles will be added shortly): http://www.panamint.co.uk/acatalog/DVD_Sale.html (Spotter: Nick Wheat)

It might seem a little early to be thinking about 2010 calendars, but it's July already, you know!

The Great Central Railways Society has a 2010 wall calendar available to downloaded from its website. The 2006 one is still there too! http://www.gcrsociety.co.uk/Forward.html

I'm also pleased again to publicise David and Marion Canning's 2010 Railway Calendars. All calendars are A4 spiral bound with 15 or more photos in each. There is no price increase this year, and colour photos are used as much as possible but where B&W has had to be used, they are printed on colour materials to try to give a nice effect. As usual 50p will be given to the Cat Protection League for each calendar sold.

Railway subjects are: Signalboxes - colour. A selection of signalboxes nationwide Steam on the Berks and Hants Line - colour and B&W, 1961 to 2009 Hydraulic - B&W. Other subjects are available - please enquire for details.

All calendars are 8-00 each, plus postage, except Hydraulic, which is 7-00 plus postage.

Postage is... One calendar: 2-25. Two Calendars: 2-00 each. Three calendars: 3-00. Four Calendars: 4-00. Five Calendars: 4-50. Six calendars: 5-50. Further calendars 50p each calendar added on to the six rate.

These prices reflect postage rates and cost of necessary packing.

Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

West Clare 0-6-2T No 5 Slieve Callan built by Dbs of Glasgow in 1892, the last surviving West Clare steam locomotive, stood for many years on a plinth outside Ennis station. In April 1996, it was leased from the CIE and, after undergoing restoration by Alan Keef Ltd at Ross on Wye, was returned to Ennis on 3rd July 2009. From August it is expected to be in use on the West Clare heritage line at Moyasta. http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2009/0702/1224249908060.html http://www.irishtrucker.com/news/news_detail.asp?nid=4623

Welsh Highland Railway NG/G16 Garratt No 109 has been purchased for service on Welsh Highland Railway by The Waterman Railway Heritage Trust, and will be restored by London & North Western Railway Company at Crewe. http://pete.railnuts.com/2009/07/06/press-release/

Air-smoothed Merchant Navy Following the re-streamlining of LMS pacific Duchess of Hamilton, plans have emerged to "unrebuild" an SR Merchant Navy pacific to recreate an original air-smoothed version. The various parties behind the scheme, however, have asked for anonymity until the project is launched.

Norton Fitzwarren Taunton Deane Borough Council has granted planning permission to the West Somerset Railway to build a four-coach platform at Norton Fitzwarren. Construction could be completed in time for the August Steam Fayre and Vintage Rally although, as approval to bring it into use has to be obtained from the ORR, this seems unlikely.

Okehampton The planned Sunday Yeoford-Okehampton-Meldon service, connecting at Yeoford with Exeter-Barnstaple trains has been delayed until at least 4th September. Meanwhile, services will run between Okehampton and Meldon Quarry on Sundays and to both Meldon Quarry and Sampford Courtenay on Saturdays with "Thumper" DEMU No 1132.

West Midlands Completion of the lowering of track under two listed bridges in the Whiteacre Heath area will permit the movement of larger 9ft 6in "big box" containers to the Birmingham Freight Terminal at Birch Coppice. Previously, these containers were moved from Felixstowe by road.

Severn Valley Railway Chiltern Railways is to run a through one-off service to London Marylebone on 15th August. It will depart Bridgnorth at 0745, and call at all stations to Kidderminster with an arrival in London at 1159.

Norway Track on the Oslo-Drammen main line is being quadrupled west of Lysaker. This route carries heavy passenger and freight traffic destined for Bergen, Stravenger and Skien as well as suburban EMUs.

Angola The rehabilitation of the Luanda railways, in progress since 2003, will be concluded this year whilst Momes railways, in southwest Namibe Province, will be finished in 2010, and the Benguela (centre-west) railways will be concluded in 2011. http://tinyurl.com/m2tt2d

Libya In August 2008, Russian Railways began work on a 344-mile long, 4' 8" gauge, 155mph, double track railway parallel to the Mediterranean coast between between Benghazi.and Syrt. At the same time, China Railways are extending the line from Syrt a further 202 miles along the coast to Al Khums. Both lines are expected to be in use by 2013, and in the future will form part of an international transport corridor across North Africa.

Former Soviet Countries Although denied by the Georgian Government the leader of the opposition alleges that confidential negotiations are taking place to sell Georgian Railways to Russia. Moscow already manages the Armenian Railways (renaming them the South Caucasus Railways) and have also rehabilitated the Abkhazian segment of Georgian Railways. Last year, the Kremlin said it would create a rail link between Vladikavkaz in Northern Ossetia and Tskhinvali in South Ossetia. http://www.messenger.com.ge/issues/1891_july_7_2009/1891_econ_one.html
