The Ecclesbourne Valley Railway's refreshed website has been launched: http://www.e-v-r.com/

A huge collection of images and information: http://www.railblue.com/index.htm

Among the interesting items are a number of network maps. This one is from about the 1920s, and there are links to others from this page: http://tinyurl.com/2sbsko

Ralph Rawlinson reports that The Railway Magazine reports that key phases of work to rebuild the disused Airdrie-Bathgate line over the winter will necessitate a series of related line closures. The first phase to double the track of the Bathgate branch has meant a 16-day closure in October following Sunday closures in September. Additionally, the project also requires electrification of the central track through Mound Tunnel to Edinburgh Waverley. This work, involving timetable changes and replacement bus services, will be carried out over a nine day period from 25th December to 2nd January. The double track will open in 2008 whilst the section through to Airdrie and Glasgow will open in 2010. Assurances have previously been given that the cycleway (part on NCN75), at present occupying the trackbed between Drumgelloch and Bathgate West Jn, will be accommodated as far as possible alongside the new line.

Ralph has also sent a list of the current "World's Fastest Runs":

The Railway Gazette's World Speed Survey 2007, using public schedules, has found that the fastest start-to-stop rail journey in the world is the 167.6km (104.1mile) sprint along France's LGV Est from Lorraine TGV to Champagne Ardennes by Train 5422, which is allowed just 36min at an average speed of 279.3km/h (173.5mph). Two runs recorded on this train achieved times of exactly 36min with maximum speeds recorded on both of 321 km/h (199.5mph).

France also holds second position, with Train 5102 between Valence TGV and Avignon TGV (259.4km/h, 161.2mph). Japan is third with Okayama to Hiroshima (255.7km/h, 158.9mph). The report, with a table showing fastest trains in each country, can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/yoxlle

The UK's best domestic performance is a 173.3 km/h (107.7mph) run over the 303.2km (188.4 mile) from King's Cross to York in 1 h 45 min, dropping the country to ninth place in the world rankings, compared with second place 30 years ago.
